Anesthesia Options for Your Tummy Tuck
While all cosmetic surgery procedures can be performed while the patient is under local anesthesia, most prefer to be completely asleep during the surgery. For this effect, the surgeon is required to use general anesthesia to avoid patient anxiety.
However, many anesthesia medications cause nausea and sleepiness when the patient recovers. Therefore researchers set out to find a more effective and efficient anesthesia for cosmetic procedure. Because plastic surgery is minimally invasive (it does not involve entering the body cavity)- even the most complex surgery, such as a tummy tuck, only require minimal anesthesia. Not too much, not too little.
The new anesthesia is known as “Goldilocks” anesthesia for this very reason. It puts patients to sleep without all of the nasty side effects when he or she wakes up after the surgery.
