Cosmetic Surgery

What is Cosmetic Surgery?

Cosmetic surgery is a broad category of operations that are each intended to improve the appearance of the body or face in many different ways. There are dozens of types of cosmetic surgery which are very popular. While many cosmetic surgery patients are older and are looking to help modify the appearance of parts of the body that may have shown signs of age, other types of cosmetic surgery can be used to alter the appearance of abnormalities that develop at birth or earlier on in life.

How does the Cosmetic Surgery work?

Because there is no single procedure involved in cosmetic surgery, there are many different processes that can be used. These procedures run from the minimally invasive to moderately or even highly invasive. Many of the procedures involve using endoscopic instruments to help adjust the muscles and other tissue directly under the skin in different parts of the body to reduce wrinkles and lines. Other procedures make use of liposuction and other fat reduction techniques to eliminate excessive tissue from different parts of the body. Still other procedures involve the implantation of inserts into various parts of the body to enhance the shape or size of those body areas.

Who is a candidate for Cosmetic Surgery?

Essentially, cosmetic surgery puts your body at certain risks for no other health benefits besides an appearance gain. Therefore, the successful candidate for a cosmetic surgery procedure should be otherwise entirely healthy. Any underlying conditions may jeopardize the benefits and the procedure itself. Most cosmetic surgeons will require that their patients be adult and fully developed so that the surgery does not prohibit or affect the growth of the patient at all. If you are interested in cosmetic surgery of one type or another, consult with your doctor.

What will the results be like?

The results of the cosmetic surgery procedure will depend upon the nature of the procedure itself. In the case of rejuvenation treatments, for instance, the result is that the face, arms, legs or another part of the body will appear to be younger than previously. This is accomplished by the reduction of wrinkles and the supporting of sagging skin. In a modification procedure like a rhinoplasty (nose job), the results will be a modified body part of some kind. This may include wider, thinner, taller or shorter profiles for the nose, as well as altered nostril shape and size. Consult with your cosmetic surgeon for ideas about how the results can be shaped to your specific needs and desires.

What are the risks of Cosmetic Surgery?

As with other procedures, there are some risks inherent to cosmetic surgery. The biggest risk is a secondary infection, which can be very serious if untreated. Other risks include scarring, excessive bleeding, alteration of the appearance of the body in ways that are unexpected and related problems.
